Catalyst Website Launches
4/8/2009
Welcome to the interweb! Catalyst finally has a website... er... web page! It's small for now, but think of it as a slowly evolving entity. In fact, changes may be happening as we speak. Scary, eh?
For now you can read a little bit about us and see what most of the launch team is up to via their twitter posts. We'll also be updating the website with past and future events, so check regularly!
Does God Exist? Catalyst attends a debate
4/4/2009
Catalyst attended a very important debate recently regarding one of life's simple, yet seemingly unanswerable questions, "Does God exist?" The debate took place at Biola University in La Mirada at 7pm, and was between renown authors Christopher Hitchens and Dr. William Lane Craig. Hitchens, a devoted atheist and author of the book God is Not Great, obviously took the "God does not exist" approach while Craig laid out the argument for God's existence.
While we urge you to check out the debate and decide for yourself who had the better argument, all of us in the Crew felt that Craig "pwned him." (Actual quote!)
Carson Care Project Launch
4/4/2009
The Carson Care Project kicked off on Saturday, April 4 at 9am. People from more than five churches woke up early in the morning with the energy to serve the community and show God's love to Carson. While we didn't get to do many chores this week, we were met with much appreciation and love from our neighbors who will make sure to save us some chores for next time.
We'll be going out again soon, so look for all the people wearing green shirts and say, "Hello!"
UPDATE: Our friend Justin Lacanilao of EL Church in Pasadena put up some videos on his blog Events for Christ. Make sure to check it out!
UPDATE No. Dos: We put up some of our own videos as well. See below
Launch Team
This is the team that has been working hard to get Catalyst LTM Church up and running. If you would like to contact us, feel free to send us an email and let us know what's up!
- Dave Sormillon, Lead Pastor

- Growing up as the oldest in a family where both parents were in medicine, Dave always thought he’d grow up, go to medical school, and become the next doctor in the family. But God had different plans for his life, and in high school, Dave sensed God’s call to go into the ministry! He just recently graduated from Biola University & Talbot with his Master’s in Divinity and is crazy excited at the thought of being the future full-time pastor of Catalyst LTM Church!
- Lutz Abella

- Lutz feels that Catalyst came at the perfect time is his life – a point where he was searching for something more meaningful and fulfilling. Catalyst has been the strongest influence for his faith is his life. Lutz also hopes that he can be an amazing influence in peoples lives just as much as God and Catalyst has been in his life.
- Leia Convento

- Leia has found a passion in serving God through her commitment to Catalyst LTM. Raised in the 562, she’s a junior at CSULB majoring in visual arts with an emphasis on graphic design. She loves cheesecake handrolls from Tsunami and wants to someday live in India for a year!
- Louise Gomez

- Louise loves working with children and is currently majoring in Child Development & Family Studies and Family Life Education at Cal State Long Beach. She hopes to someday work as a Child Life Specialist and to contribute her talents to Catalyst LTM Church in a child and family ministry. For fun, she loves to surf on her longboard at Newport Beach!
- Janna Huang

- One thing that Janna has learned in life is that God allows things to happen for a reason. Right now God has brought her to be a part of Catalyst LTM. She has a passion for high school ministry and is excited to see what God is going to do with her and with Catalyst. Janna just graduated from nursing school at Biola University, loves kicking it with her cousins, is a sucker for acoustic guitar music, and plays nerdy games.
- Angela Lonzanida

- Aside from doing taxes all day, three words that describe Angela are: eating, paperwork and NERF. Born and raised in the cool breezes of Northern California, Angela came down south for college but did not expect to be part of a church plant soon after. Besides anticipating God's next move in her own life, she is excited to see how God is going to work through Catalyst LTM. She also loves cooking, drawing, and occasionally climbing trees. In addition, both of her elbows are double-jointed.
- Teddy Martinez

- Teddy grew up in the church all his life. Being a pastor’s kid, he’s been in many different churches in his life and through that church experience, he has felt a calling to help plant a church! He was born in the Philippines and moved to the US when he was three but does not know Tagalog anymore :(. He loves to write slam poetry, ride waves and train in the art of muay thai kickboxing. 90210 RULES!
- Christopher McDougall

- Though he’s been going to church since he was a baby, Chris never expected to be planting one. With experience in the youth and worship ministries, he hopes to take the talents that the Lord has given him and give it all back to Him. (People also say he kinda looks like Justin Long!)
- Ariel Penales

- Ariel Penales has been a member of Catalyst since it began and has been fortunate enough to have seen it grow to this day. He currently has a role alongside other church members as a Business, Legal, and Technological adviser. God has truly blessed him to have known this group of individuals and hopes that He will continue to work in all our lives to help those who have not yet known His name.
- Mike Polendey

- A fool for Christ and a "Homie" to everyone he meets. Mike has been active in ministry for the past five years. He grew up in the Southbay attending local private schools and has been a resident of Carson his whole life. The first time he attended Catalyst was less than a year ago and became automatically inspired by the passion of each member to know Christ. In his spare time, he likes BMX riding, training in the arts of "Jeet Kune Do" and "Kali" Filipino weaponry, and playing basketball.
- Michelle Quizon

- "Meesh" remembers attending the very first Catalyst Bible Study in the end of summer in 2007. She immediately became captivated by Dave Sormillon's message about God's love and our love for others as the foundations of our Christian faith. Although she’s grown up her whole life attending church, Catalyst has been the most influencial factor in her growing faith. Currently working as an LVN and seeking to further her nursing education, Meesh enjoys photography (she has over 31,000 pictures in her online album over the last 4 years!), anything artsy-fartsy, and event planning (especially weddings).
- Dean Sormillon

- Although he grew up in an encouraging Christian family, Dean never knew what it meant to be a mature Christian believer until he reached his early teens. Catalyst has helped him cultivate this faith that he gained into something that he never could have imagined. Dean likes riding the snow & waves with his friends & family, nursing, funny YouTube videos, & staying up late watching Late Night with Conan O’Brien! Chyea dude!
